Rainbow Cakes we have made
The first question with a rainbow cake is whether the rainbow is on the outside or the inside. Outside means a fondant or buttercream arch rising off the top, a cloud of sprinkles at each end and a drip in three or four colours down the side. Inside means coloured sponge layers, so the reaction comes at the first slice instead — and plenty of people ask for both. From there it is a matter of palette: bright primary colours for a party, or a softer pastel version that reads more grown up and pairs well with a unicorn horn or a scatter of butterflies. A name in gold script or a fondant number on the front is easy to add.
Sizes start at 1 Kg and most children's parties take 2-3 Kg, which also gives the arch room to look right. Pricing runs from ₹2,500/Kg, with the rainbow cakes on this page between ₹3,750 and ₹7,500. Questions people ask us
Does the rainbow show in every slice, or only the middle one?
If you have gone for coloured layers inside, they run through the whole cake, so every slice comes out striped. The arch on top is a single piece, so it goes to whoever asks first, usually the birthday child. If you want the arch and the layers both, say so when you order, because plenty of people assume one means the other.
Does a rainbow inside limit which flavour we can have?
Only in one way. A dark chocolate sponge hides the colour, so if you want the layers to show we will steer you to a lighter flavour and tell you which ones work. Colour and flavour are otherwise separate choices, and since flavour never changes the price, none of this costs more.
Is the arch fondant or buttercream, and will it stand on its own?
The arch is cut in fondant and left to firm up before it goes on the cake, which is why it holds its shape instead of drooping. The sprinkle clouds at each end and the drip down the side are the softer parts. Keep the cake cold until you are ready to cut it and it will look the way it did when it arrived.
Will the bright colours mark children's hands and clothes?
Strong colours can leave a mark on fingers and on light clothing for a while, which is worth knowing before a party where everyone is in white shirts. If that worries you, we can keep the bright colour to the arch and the sprinkles and leave the sponge plain, or move the whole cake to a pastel palette.
